Cherukole Theerthadanam

Cherukole Theerthadanam

One of the most significant ceremonies of the Sangham is the Cherukole Theerthadanam (Pilgrimage), held annually on the last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of December. Devotees prepare for this sacred event by observing a special fast for twelve consecutive Fridays over a span of three months. This period of devotion concludes on the third Friday of Dhanu, the Malayalam month that falls in the last week of December.

On the last Friday of December, thousands of devotees from across India and even abroad gather at the Cherukole Subhananda Ashram. They offer the sacred Irumudikettu—a two-part bundle carried by pilgrims containing offerings such as a coin, rice, agarbathi, rose water, camphor, bhasmam, and other pooja items—before the Madadhipathi and receive blessings.

The pilgrimage, known as “12 Velliyazhcha Vratha Samaapana Theerthadanam”, was initiated by Brahmasree Anandaji Gurudev. In its early days, devotees undertook the journey on foot, traveling in groups while chanting the sacred psalms of Gurudev. Today, to ensure greater convenience and comfort—especially for those coming from distant places—pilgrims are permitted to travel by vehicles.

During this period of worship, devotees partake only in vegetarian food. The observance of the vratha is practiced primarily through purity in thought, word, and deed. As part of the ritual, they confess their sins before the Guru and receive atonement, in a manner reminiscent of Christian confession. However, this does not imply that sins committed deliberately will be absolved. The law of karma remains inexorable—every action bears its consequence, and no penance can erase its destined result.
